About Us

Since its founding in 1979 by the hospitals in Rhode Island, The Rhode Island Blood Center has established itself among the premier blood collection agencies in the United States.

Serving 100 percent of the transfusion needs of every hospital in Rhode Island (including The Westerly Hospital) and being a secondary supplier to many hospitals in Connecticut and southeastern Massachusetts, the Rhode Island Blood Center must collect up to 280 pints of blood every day to meet the needs of patients in our community.

The Rhode Island Blood Center has a Donor Center located in Westerly that we are proud to call home, located at 143 Franklin St. in the Westerly Crossings Shopping Plaza. Here donors can give whole blood or platelets, a very special type of donation that is most often used to help cancer patients. The Rhode Island Blood Center also operates many mobile blood drives throughout the Westerly-metro area working with many schools, companies, religious and civic organizations.
